The Lionhead Oranda (Carassius auratus) is s sign of wealth and influence and continues to fascinate aquarists from all over the world. Orandas are easily recognized by their cap (a series of outgrowths on their head). The cap is a distinctive feature of this species and is also known as the ‘wen’. This usually doesn’t fully develop until they are around 2 years old. They were bred in China to have a “hood” which somewhat depicts the image of a mythical Chinese lion-dog. Lionhead Orandas can have a huge variety in color: black, red, black with white dots, blue, black with grey gradient, red with orange-yellowish spots, white and many others.

The Zebra Danio is endemic to India, however encountering wild specimens is rare, as the majority of Zebra danio available within the aquarium trade are commercially produced because it’s more cost effective and they spawn very readily. One of the most popular danio species and very easy to keep, the Zebra danio appears just as its name suggests with a shimmering silver body that has several horizontal dark stripes. Zebra danio are natural shoaling fish, thriving best with at least 8 individuals but more are encouraged. Danios are gregarious, and too few of individuals can result in them harassing other tank mates. An adult Zebra danio can reach a size of approximately 1.5″.

Amano shrimp (Caridina multidentata) is one of the best and most useful freshwater shrimps for keeping in a tank. This shrimp is irreplaceable in a tank since it can clean it by eating algae. Takashi Amano, a famous aquascapist and designer of so-called “nature aquariums,” was the first to use these shrimps to deal with algae in his planted tanks. After revealing their remarkable ability to eat algae, he ordered several thousands of shrimps from the local seller. Since the 1980-s, aquarists started to call this shrimp “Amano shrimp.”
